Frequently Asked Questions
What is an owner trust and how does it work?
An aircraft owner trust is a legal structure that allows a U.S.-based trustee—like Core Aviation Group or one of our corporate affiliates—to hold legal title to an aircraft on behalf of another party, known as the beneficiary. This is often used when the beneficiary is not eligible to directly register the aircraft with the FAA, such as in the case of a non-U.S. citizen or company. While we hold the legal title, you as the beneficiary retain full operational control and decision-making authority.
Who uses owner trusts and why?
Owner trusts serve a wide range of clients, including international owners, leasing firms, private buyers, and even U.S.-based individuals seeking additional privacy. Some common reasons include:
Meeting FAA citizenship requirements for registration
Keeping ownership information confidential
Simplifying complex international or corporate ownership structures
Making U.S.-registered aircraft more attractive for resale or financing
This is a mainstream tool—not a workaround or shortcut—and is widely accepted throughout the industry.
Is this legal and recognized by the FAA?
Yes. The FAA has long allowed owner trusts as a fully legal means of registering aircraft. The key is compliance with the FAA’s established procedures and documentation requirements. We help make sure your trust setup is clean, well-documented, and meets all necessary criteria.
Will I still control the aircraft if I use an owner trust?
Yes. You, as the trust’s beneficiary, will operate the aircraft just like any other owner. The trustee does not interfere with day-to-day decisions, usage, or operations. Our role is limited to managing the legal title on paper and making sure it stays FAA-compliant.
What are the ongoing responsibilities after setup?
We monitor and manage registration compliance and handle any necessary updates with the FAA. You handle the operation, insurance, maintenance, and overall use of the aircraft — just like a traditional owner would.
Is there a minimum or maximum size or type of aircraft that qualifies?
Owner trusts are commonly used for everything from private piston aircraft to large commercial airliners. If the aircraft qualifies for FAA registration, it likely qualifies for an owner trust structure.
How long does the process take?
Assuming we are dealing with no other complications, we can typically set up the trust and get the registration submitted within a few business days. International transactions or complex structures may take slightly longer, but we’ll guide you every step of the way.
What happens when I want to sell or transfer?
When you're ready to sell, we assist with dissolving the trust and updating the title—either to the new buyer or to another trust, if needed. We make transitions smooth and straightforward.
Can Core Aviation Group act as trustee directly?
In most cases, yes. If for some reason we cannot, we may use another entity which is closely affiliated with Core Aviation Group. Either way, you'll still receive the same support, communication, and documentation services through Core Aviation Group.
Does this affect insurance or financing?
Most aircraft lenders and insurers are familiar with owner trusts and have no issue with them, provided all documentation is clear and current. We’re happy to coordinate with your providers to ensure a smooth process.
Is this service only for international owners?
No. While many clients are non-U.S. citizens, U.S. individuals and entities may also choose to use a trust structure for reasons like privacy, estate planning, or separating ownership from operation.
Are there any hidden costs or annual fees?
We charge a straightforward setup fee and an annual trustee support fee. There are no surprise costs, and everything will be clearly outlined before you commit.
